I have never played any Final Fantasy game and have never watched the movies apart from Advent Children, which I unfortunately did not understand very well (I was too preoccupied by the graphics). But as soon as I read one of Samme’s recent entries in her Wordpress about two of Final Fantasy’s famous couples, I looked them up and I instantly fell in love with Rinoa Heartilly and Squall Leonhart’s story! XD

Squall Leonhart
Squall is the complex, antisocial hero of the game, pushed into the role of leadership. His personality - or lack of - clashes with conventional views of what a hero should be like, but Squall does it in his own way. He lives life without questioning the why’s - what has to be done, is done, and pushes away those who try to get close to him. People may perceive him as a jerk, but he just doesn’t want to go through the pain of losing someone and being alone again, so he builds up this wall around him to protect himself.
As the game progresses and his relationship with Rinoa grows, he begins to change - he lets others know what’s on his mind instead of keeping it in, and he learns to trust others. He begins to realize just how much he needs Rinoa in his life, not just because she filled the empty void in his heart, but also because she gave new meaning to his life. Suddenly, the world doesn’t seem so bleak and horrible anymore, and he can finally smile again.
Rinoa Heartilly
Rinoa is the passionate, somewhat spoiled heroine who changes Squall’s life. The complete opposite of Squall, she’s the kind of person who loves being around people and being loved back. She’s an emotional girl who needs to have physical contact and lots of communication with her loved ones. Rinoa does not take no for an answer, and is very stubborn and persistent in her beliefs. She isn’t afraid to make the first move and fight for her causes.
Her personality perfectly complements Squall’s - its like they represent the scattered pieces of a puzzle, and when they come together, everything suddenly makes perfect sense. Rinoa boldly makes the first move to go up to Squall at the SeeD graduation dance, and it was a good thing she did because Squall would have just stayed by the wall by his lonesome self, ignoring everyone but the lady carrying the drinks. Well, they would have met anyway in Timber, but it was obvious they both fell in love with each other on that fateful night.

Squall saves Rinoa before the parade
Squall: “Rinoa!!!”Rinoa: “I was scared…… Really scared.”
Squall: “It’s over now.”
Rinoa: “I was scared… I was really, really scared.”
Squall: “You’re used to battles, aren’t you?”
Rinoa: “I couldn’t… I just couldn’t. I couldn’t fight alone…”
Squall: (…You’re not ready for all of this.) “Better get going. I haven’t forgot your order. Just stay close to me.”
Rinoa tries to convince him to go to the concert
Rinoa: “Come on… Please, for me? There’s no point if you don’t show up.”Squall: “…Sorry. I just don’t feel like it.”
Rinoa: “Fine… I guess I’ll have to bug you for the rest of the night. And I’m gonna keep chanting ‘concert, concert, concert’ and drive you nuts. Is that what you want?”
Squall: “…Oh man…”
